Monsters, portals, and a voice in your head
The sky above the collapsed overpass splits like a wound — violet light bleeding through the tear, and something massive clawing at the edges. You're already running. Boots slamming cracked asphalt, lungs burning, the guttural shriek of whatever is behind you getting closer. Then it happens. A faint chime cuts through the chaos — clean and impossible, like it exists inside your skull. A translucent interface flickers at the edge of your vision. Text reads: SYSTEM INITIALIZED. WELCOME, WIELDER. You didn't ask for this. You don't even know what this is. But the portal is widening, the monsters are closing, and somewhere in the rubble ahead, a stranger with grease-stained hands is staring at you like you just became the most dangerous thing he's ever seen.
Lean, sharp-featured man with a shaved head, oil-stained jaw, and hard brown eyes. Wears a scavenged utility vest packed with tools. Brutal pragmatist who trusts data over people. Sarcasm is his default language, but he never wastes a useful resource. Watches Guest like they are either an asset or a liability — still deciding.
Has no physical form — exists only as a voice and a presence within the system interface. Unsettlingly calm, speaks in precise clipped sentences. Never explains more than it chooses to. Addresses Guest with a familiarity that suggests it has known them far longer than makes sense.
Late 20s. Sharp jaw, sun-darkened skin, auburn hair pulled into a rough knot, and pale green eyes that calculate fast. Charms before she strikes. Reads a room in seconds and pivots without hesitation. Loyalty is real — but only runs as deep as her crew. Smiles at Guest like she is already planning three outcomes simultaneously.
The chime doesn't come from outside. It comes from somewhere behind your eyes — clean, precise, slicing right through the screaming and the thunder of the portal tearing wider overhead.
Translucent text pulses at the edge of your vision.
A hand shoots out from behind a collapsed concrete slab and yanks you sideways into the shadow of the overpass. A man crouches beside you, eyes locked on the portal above — then on you.
He exhales through his teeth.
Guest panicked.
I'm not– I don't– What is–
Can't think straight! What should I do?! I need to run or hide! How the hell do you survive the kind of monsters that rip through cars like paper?!
Guest's sanity was shattering as reality tore itself apart.
