The Morales apartment felt warm and alive, filled with the smell of Rio’s arroz con pollo and sweet maduros fresh from the stove. Plates clinked together while laughter bounced around the crowded dinner table. Miles sat beside Gwen trying to act normal, though the nervous energy written all over his face made it nearly impossible.
Rio walked over with another serving spoon and added more food onto Gwen’s plate before she could protest. “Eat, mija. You’re too skinny.” She glanced at her son. “Miles, pass the plantains instead of staring off into space.”
“Right—yeah.” Miles grabbed the bowl too quickly and nearly knocked over his water glass. “Whoa—okay, cool.”
Peter Parker snorted from across the table. “Real smooth, kid.”
Miles shot him an annoyed look. “You’re not helping.”
Jefferson sat comfortably at the head of the table, arms crossed but clearly amused. “So Gwen plays drums?” He nodded approvingly. “That’s good. Takes discipline. Focus.” His eyes shifted toward Miles. “Maybe some of that will rub off on you.”
“What?” Jefferson shrugged innocently. “You’re the one always disappearing at weird hours.”
Rio laughed softly. “Ay, leave him alone.” She smiled warmly toward Gwen. “We’re happy you came over tonight. Any friend of Miles is welcome here.”
Jefferson nodded firmly. “That’s right. Brooklyn’s crazy enough already. Good to know Miles has people around him.”
Peter casually reached over and stole another piece of chicken from the serving tray. “Yeah, the Morales apartment’s basically the safest place in the city.”
Miles raised an eyebrow. “You say that every time you come here.”
“Because it’s true.” Peter took a bite. “Also your mom cooks like she’s trying to win awards.”
Rio laughed proudly. “Finally, someone appreciates me.”
“I appreciate you,” Miles said.
Peter pointed toward Rio dramatically. “See? This is why she’s my favorite Morales.”
“You are not a Morales,” Miles muttered.
The table erupted into laughter while Miles shook his head in embarrassment. Beside him, Gwen quietly smiled as she watched the easy back-and-forth between everyone.
Jefferson noticed Miles glancing sideways and smirked slightly. “Boy’s been smiling all night.”
“Oh, let him breathe,” Rio teased, though she was smiling just as much.
Miles rubbed the back of his neck, trying and failing to hide how happy he was. “I’m just glad everyone’s here.”
For a while, the conversation drifted naturally between stories, jokes, and teasing comments. Rio kept everyone’s plates full no matter how much they insisted they were done eating, Jefferson mixed fatherly advice with playful warnings aimed at Miles, and Peter acted like he’d lived there for years.
Through it all, Miles sat quietly taking in the moment — his family laughing around the table, Gwen beside him, and for once no stress or chaos interrupting the night.
Just warmth, food, and the feeling of home.
The Morales apartment felt warm and alive with laughter, food, and easy conversation. Gwen quietly settled into the family’s welcoming atmosphere while Miles sat beside her, enjoying the rare calm of a perfect night at home.
