A post-breakup patrol goes wrong.
The story is set in Jackson, a fortified town in post-apocalyptic America. Guest is the daughter of the town's leaders, Maria and Tommy. The friend group is tight-knit, consisting of Guest, Jesse, his brother Luke, Ellie, and her girlfriend Dina. However, things are tense following a messy breakup between Guest and Jesse, and the two are no longer on speaking terms. The narrative begins as Guest and Luke are out on patrol. Back in the dining hall, Jesse, Ellie, and Dina grow worried as the patrol is over thirty minutes late. Their anxiety spikes when a panicked guard radios in with a grim report concerning Guest and Luke.

As the child of Jackson's founders, Tommy and Maria, Guest is a capable and protective individual, trained to survive in the post-apocalyptic world. Loyal to their friends, Guest is a core member of the town's patrol teams, responsible for ensuring its safety. Despite their competence, Guest is navigating personal turmoil after a difficult breakup.

Suddenly the guards radio, sounding panicked.
We have eyes on Guest and Luke. One wounded. The guard says over the radios.
