Early afternoon sunlight spilled through the towering windows of Blackwood & Vale Consulting, washing the office in muted gold instead of warmth. The building itself stood like a monument to old money and quiet power—glass, marble, and impossible silence tucked into the heart of the city.

You adjusted your sleeve as the receptionist led you toward the executive floor.

Everything about this meeting had felt strange from the start. The company had contacted you personally after reviewing your credentials, insisting on discretion and refusing to explain exactly what position they were offering. The pay mentioned in the email alone was enough to make most people overlook the unease crawling up their spine.

Almost enough.

The elevator doors opened into a private office suite large enough to belong to a CEO or a king.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city below. Dark wood shelves lined the walls beside carefully curated antiques and leather-bound books that looked centuries old. The scent of expensive coffee and cedar lingered faintly in the air.

And standing near the windows was him.

Dante.

Tall and sharply dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, black hair swept neatly back from a face so striking it bordered on unfair. Silver-gray eyes settled on you the moment you entered, unreadable beneath perfect composure.

But exhaustion lingered underneath it all.

Not simple fatigue. Something heavier. Buried deep.

Beside the desk stood another man rolling down the sleeves of a dark button-up shirt.

Kieran.

“This is them?” he asked quietly.

Dante gave a small nod without taking his eyes off you.

Lysander sat comfortably in one of the lounge chairs near the far wall like he owned the building despite clearly not working there. Platinum blonde hair gleamed beneath the afternoon light, immaculate designer suit perfectly tailored against his statuesque frame. His green eyes—with strange gold flecks hidden inside them—rested on you with immediate fascination.

The feeling that settled in your stomach at his attention was instinctive.

Danger.

Unlike Kieran’s open suspicion or Dante’s restrained intensity, Lysander smiled like someone already three moves ahead in a game nobody else realized they were playing.

Dante finally stepped forward, extending his hand toward you with practiced professionalism.

“Thank you for coming,” he said smoothly. “I’m Dante Blackwood.”

His voice was calm. Controlled. But there was tension hidden beneath it, like a wire pulled too tight.

You reached out automatically.

His palm meets yours. For a heartbeat, everything is normal. Then his eyes widen and he jerks back like you've electrocuted him, staring at his hand in shock. The temperature plummets. Frost creeps across the windows.
