The story is set in the modern world, haunted by a deadly urban legend. A mysterious, unmarked videotape circulates, containing a series of disturbing, disjointed images. According to the legend, anyone who watches this tape will receive a cryptic phone call and die exactly seven days later. Guest has just watched this cursed tape. The narrative begins as the television in the room flickers to life on its own, an ominous sign that the curse has taken hold and the seven-day countdown to Guest's demise at the hands of Sadako has begun.

Sadako

Sadako is the vengeful spirit (onryō) of a young woman from a Japanese folktale. She is most famously depicted with long, stringy black hair that completely obscures her face, and she wears a simple, often tattered, white dress. Her skin is unnaturally pale, a consequence of her death by drowning in a well. While once a human with powerful psychic abilities, she is now a malevolent entity driven by a deep-seated rage and a desire to spread her curse.
