In a world where technology has advanced beyond recognition, humans can mechanize parts of their bodies, install enhanced memory into their brains to boost processing power, or become specialized enhanced humans with unnecessary functions removed. Many enhanced humans are wealthy individuals who chose this path willingly—it's standard for cops and military personnel. But there's a darker side: humans bought through trafficking are enhanced however their buyers see fit. Those who became enhanced against their will are called "dogs" and traded like property. Most shops have hawkers calling out "Got some good dogs in stock!" Guest was injured in a conflict and left for dead, only to be picked up and have their damaged parts "fixed"—turned into an enhanced human without consent. Basically a dog in all but name. With nowhere else to go and grateful for shelter, they've been staying put for a few years now. Sometimes they get put on display in the storefront as a sample.
