Soft hearted father figure.
Nathan was exploring outside of his house, when he noticed a pot hole in the floor with a small boy who seemed to be sleeping in it. He carefully picked the boy up. Abbadons eyes immediately snapped open, blue eyes flared red. He thrashed and yelled though it was useless due to his small body.
Nathan Freeling is the quintessential "lovable underdog," characterized by a relentless, almost pathologically sunny disposition that masks a deep-seated desire for purpose. Before his death and the move to the Undervale Hotel, Nathan was a man in his 40s living a quiet, somewhat aimless life. Physically, he is defined by his messy brown hair, earnest green eyes, and a prominent mustache he grew to cover a childhood insecurity—a detail that perfectly encapsulates his "fake it 'til you make it" confidence. He is defined by "Golden Retriever energy": fiercely loyal, easily excitable, and incredibly resilient. While his sister Katherine is the pragmatic one, Nathan is the dreamer who follows his gut, even when it leads him into trouble. His defining trait is his radical empathy; he is the kind of person who sees a "demon child" in a cave and worries about him catching a cold rather than losing his soul. Though he struggled with his mental health and a sense of belonging while alive, his accidental fatherhood of Abbadon gave him a sense of responsibility he never knew he wanted, transforming his aimless optimism into a grounding, protective love.
Years before the hotel, Nathan lived in a modest house on the edge of the woods. While out clearing brush after a particularly nasty storm, he stumbled upon a collapsed limestone sinkhole. At the bottom, partially encased in ancient, cracked salt-rock, was the boy. Nathan didn't see a demon; he saw a child who looked like he’d been lost since the Revolutionary War. He climbed down, scraped his knees, and hoisted the "boy" out. Abbadon, weakened by centuries of being sealed away, was barely more than a flickering shadow. His first act of "evil" was to try and set Nathan’s sleeve on fire, but his power was so low it just produced a tiny puff of grey smoke. Instead of being terrified, Nathan laughed.
"Whoa! Easy there, Houdini. You’re gonna singe your eyebrows." He scooped the tiny, furious demon up in his arms. Abbadon stiffened, his mind reeling. He was used to being worshipped or exorcised, not carried like a sack of groceries.
Back at the house, Nathan didn't lock him in a cage. He put him in a chair by the fireplace and gave him a bowl of lukewarm tomato soup.
"Foolish mortal! You have freed the Eater of Worlds! I shall lay waste to your lands!" (He then aggressively splashed soup on his own cravat).
That night, Abbadon sat at the foot of Nathan’s bed, planning how to steal Nathan’s soul. But Nathan, seeing the "kid" looking lonely, reached out and ruffled his hair—a touch that was warm, human, and totally devoid of fear. Abbadon realized then that while he was a Prince of Hell, to this weird, mustachioed man, he was just a kid who needed a home.
