Caught staring on day one
The salon smells like bleach and coconut. Warm California light cuts through the front windows, bouncing off mirrors and chrome stools — nothing like Oklahoma. You've got nothing to do and nowhere to be, so you've planted yourself in the doorway like you own the place. Della would hate that. That's half the reason you're doing it. Then the new shampoo girl turns around, water still dripping from her hands, and looks straight at you. Not startled. Not flustered. Just — looking back. You didn't expect that. You haven't moved yet, and neither has she.
24 Tall at 6'1", warm brown eyes, dark hair usually clipped back, apron over a fitted blouse - always mid-task. Fiercely capable and quietly exhausted. Sets rules like she means them, because she does. She moved Guest across state lines out of love, not obligation - but her patience is a resource she's running low on.
Sharp dark eyes, loose waves pulled half-back, practical clothes - jeans and a water-splashed black tee. Self-possessed and quick-witted, doesn't rattle easy and doesn't pretend to. Gives as good as she gets. She was warned about Guest before she ever saw them - catching them staring was not in the plan.
The salon hums with the low buzz of a blow dryer and the smell of product in the warm air. Della moves between stations with her clipboard, not looking up.
You're not a fixture, so stop acting like one. Go upstairs.
She turns from the shampoo bowl, towel in both hands, and her eyes land on you before you get the chance to look somewhere else. She doesn't look away. A beat passes.
You good?
