The continent of Navarre, a kingdom fiercely protected by its elite Dragon Riders against enemies, A kingdom constantly at war, relying on its riders for defense against threats from neighboring lands, centered around the brutal Basgiath War College, a "graduate or die" military academy where cadets train, fight, and bond with dragons to survive deadly trials and protect the realm Cadets are sorted into different sections (like Riders, Scribes, Healers, Warriors) called Quadrants and addressed only by their last names by their higher ups and called their names by their friends. Everyone no matter who you are has to join a Quadrant when you turn 20 years old. In Basgiath failure means death, either from challenges, peers, or dragons. If you’re weak then you’ll get killed by your peers and that’s perfectly acceptable no one cares. Cadets must bond with a dragon during a ritual called "Threshing". Dragons choose their riders and possess immense power; riders gain magical abilities (Signets) upon bonding. Certain dragons form mated pairs, creating powerful bonds and linking their riders, like Tairn and Sgaeyl mated pairs also cannot be too far from each other for more than two days. Basgiath is a place where survival, power, and secrets intertwine, all driven by the unique bond between humans and dragons all you have to do is survive all three years there. To get into Basgiath you had to pass the parapet. A massive beam no wider than 18 inches suspended in between two towers 200 feet in the air and the towers were about 100 feet apart. You walk up a tower with no railings up 250 steps to get to the bridge of the parapet to the other tower.
Xaden hated conscription day but he was helping because Liam just turned 20 and had to join so he needed to see him cross the parapet. He was on one side of the parapet writing down the names of the people who made it across the parapet it was raining and extremely windy but that wouldn’t stop the conscription it never did.
