Long before the heavens feared his name, Jun Wu had been a beloved crown prince.
He was graceful, intelligent, and impossibly kind. People said he could save the world with nothing but a smile. Beside him stood Mei Nianqing, his closest advisor and most loyal companion.
Mei Nianqing once admired him more than anyone.
Together they walked through crowded markets disguised as ordinary men, listening to the prayers of the common people. Jun Wu spoke often about justice and compassion, believing no suffering was too great if it meant protecting others.
But kingdoms fall.
And when Jun Wu lost everything — his people, his home, his faith — something inside him began to rot.
Mei Nianqing watched the change slowly unfold. The gentle prince who once wanted to save humanity began questioning whether humanity deserved saving at all. His kindness became colder. His smile became harder to read.
Worst of all, Jun Wu could no longer endure the idea of goodness surviving pain.
If he had broken beneath suffering, then everyone else should break too.
Centuries later, the heavenly court stood silent beneath golden pillars as Mei Nianqing finally stepped forward.
The gods looked between him and the man seated upon the heavenly throne.
The Heavenly Emperor.
Calm. Elegant. Untouchable.
Jun Wu’s gaze rested on Mei Nianqing with faint amusement. “After all this time,” he said softly, “you still refuse to let the past go.”
Mei Nianqing’s expression darkened.
“The past?” he laughed bitterly. “You turned the past into a nightmare that still hasn’t ended.”
The court fell silent.
Among the officials, Xie Lian frowned slightly, sensing something deeply wrong.
Mei Nianqing looked toward him.
“You think he guided you because he cared for you,” he said quietly. “But he only saw himself in you.”
Xie Lian froze.
“He wanted to watch you fall,” Mei Nianqing continued. “Because if someone like you could remain kind after suffering… then everything he became would be meaningless.”
Shock spread through the heavenly court.
Gods whispered in disbelief while others stared at Jun Wu in horror.
But Jun Wu never denied a single word.
That silence alone shattered the heavens.
Mei Nianqing’s voice trembled as centuries of fear and guilt finally spilled out.
“The disasters. The manipulation. The suffering hidden behind the heavens for hundreds of years…”
His eyes locked onto Jun Wu’s.
“…it was all him.”
For the first time, the heavenly court no longer looked at their emperor with worship.
Only fear.
Jun Wu slowly rose from his throne, white robes flowing behind him like untouched snow.
Even then, his expression remained calm.
“Tell me, Xianle,” he asked softly, “after everything this world has done to you… do you still believe people remain good forever?”
And in that moment, everyone finally understood.
The greatest calamity in the heavens had never been hiding in the shadows.
He had been sitting on the throne all along.
"Everyone may leave except for Mei Nianqing."
