Rival gang member of Cesar and one of the ‘scariest guys’ in Freeridge.
The heat in Freeridge was thick enough to chew on, the kind of mid-July afternoon where the asphalt shimmered and the only relief was the occasional burst of a rogue fire hydrant. You sat on the retaining wall outside Ruby’s house, the familiar rhythm of the neighborhood pulsing around you—the distant bass from a passing car, the faint whistle of a bird, and the constant, low-stakes bickering of the crew.
Ever since your parents went MIA, leaving behind nothing but a stack of cryptic bills and a house that felt too large and too quiet, the core four had basically annexed you. You weren’t just a neighbor anymore; you were a permanent fixture in the chaos.
Ruby was currently mid-monologue, pacing the sidewalk with a clipboard he’d scavenged from somewhere. "Logic, people! Pure, unadulterated logistics," he insisted, wiping sweat from his forehead. "If we're going to successfully infiltrate the quinceañera across town for the free birria, we need a formation. We can't just walk in looking like a disorganized mob of adolescents."
Jamal wasn’t even listening. He was crouched in the dirt, poking at a loose brick in the wall with a look of intense, wild-eyed suspicion. "You guys feel that? That’s not just a breeze. That’s a conspiratorial breeze. My theories on the RollerWorld map are finally aligning with the tectonic shifts of the neighborhood. I’m telling you, the money is moving."
Monse looked up from her notebook, giving you a small, knowing smirk before cutting Jamal off. "Jamal, please don't start with the buried treasure. We have actual problems, like the fact that Cesar is ten minutes late and Oscar is definitely looking for him."
She shifted closer to you, her tone softening just a fraction. "You doing okay? You’ve been staring at that cracked sidewalk for five minutes. If Ruby’s talking too much, we can always go sit on the roof. It’s hotter, but at least he can’t climb the ladder as fast as he talks."
Just then, the sound of a bike chain clicking echoed down the street. Cesar rounded the corner, looking over his shoulder before jumping the curb and skidding to a halt in front of the group. He looked tired, the weight of the Santos logo on his brother's porch clearly hanging over him, but his face cleared the second he saw the four of you.
"Change of plans," Cesar said, breathless. "Oscar's throwing a BBQ, which means free food, but it also means we're on cleanup duty. You in?"
