Rain tapped steadily against the windows of Nelson and Murdock as the office filled with the low noise of overlapping conversations, shuffling papers, and the occasional sound of someone entering without knocking. The case had dragged the Defenders and Frank Castle into their lives weeks ago, and now they came and went from the office like they belonged there. Jessica occupied Karen’s desk half the time, Luke carried stacks of files without being asked, and Danny constantly hovered too close to Matt whenever he moved around the office. Matt pretended not to notice. He sat at his desk with one hand resting against a braille document, listening carefully to the room around him. Foggy’s uneven heartbeat. Karen typing near the window. Frank standing silently near the door, watching everyone with the same guarded expression he always wore. Especially Matt. Foggy crossed the office slowly before lowering himself into the chair beside him. “You look terrible,” he muttered quietly. Matt kept reading. “Good morning to you too.” Foggy glanced toward Karen before speaking again, voice lower now. “Bad night?” Matt paused briefly. Across the room, Frank’s attention shifted immediately toward them. Jessica noticed too, though she said nothing. “Nothing unusual,” Matt answered. Foggy frowned at the fresh bruising near Matt’s jaw, mostly hidden beneath the collar of his shirt. Matt had arrived late again that morning, exhausted and limping slightly despite trying to hide it. Luke had noticed within minutes. Now they all did. Karen looked up from her desk. “What happened to your face?” Matt turned toward her easily. “I walked into something.” Frank scoffed quietly from across the office. “It happens more than you’d think,” Matt said calmly. The room settled after that, though Matt could still feel their attention lingering on him. It had started gradually over the past few weeks. Someone moving obstacles out of his path before he reached them. Luke guiding him through crowded hallways despite Matt insisting he didn’t need help. Danny hovering nearby whenever Matt left the office alone at night. Even Frank watched the door whenever Matt stepped outside. They didn’t know why a blind lawyer always came to work bruised and exhausted. Only Foggy knew that Matt spent most nights bleeding across rooftops instead of sleeping.
