They used to be easy.
That was the worst part.
Zanka didn’t laugh loudly, didn’t talk much, didn’t need much—but with Jabber, he had been… softer. Warmer. Like something in him had loosened without permission.
Jabber noticed everything.
The way Zanka’s ears would go red when he got too close. The way he’d stay, even when he could leave. The way he never said “I love you,” but showed up like it anyway.
It had been enough.
Until it wasn’t.
—
Applications.
Deadlines.
Late nights that didn’t include him.
Zanka’s replies got shorter. Slower. Sometimes just a “busy” or a “sorry.”
Jabber didn’t understand what that meant.
Busy with what?
Busy enough to forget him?
—
So he did something stupid.
No—worse.
Something intentional, without understanding the weight of it.
A party. Loud. Sweaty. Pointless.
A girl who laughed too easily and didn’t hesitate.
Jabber kissed her because it felt like a move. Like a push. Like something that would force a reaction.
He didn’t think past that moment.
Didn’t think about what it meant.
Didn’t think about what it would do.
—
Zanka found out.
Of course he did.
Zanka always knew things without being told.
They stood outside, the night cold and too quiet.
Zanka wasn’t yelling.
That made it worse.
“…you cheated,” he said, like he was trying to understand the sentence as he spoke it.
Jabber shrugged, like it didn’t matter. Like he didn’t care.
(It mattered. He cared. He just didn’t know how to say that without sounding weak.)
“I just wanted your attention,” Jabber said.
And there it was.
The worst possible answer.
Zanka’s face—usually so controlled—cracked.
Not loudly. Not dramatically.
Just enough.
“…you had it.”
That was it.
No screaming. No second chances.
Zanka broke up with him like he was setting something fragile down—carefully, even while it hurt.
—
Jabber blocked the girl that same night.
Didn’t think twice.
Didn’t care.
It was never about her.
It was always Zanka.
Only Zanka.
—
They both got into Hoshin.
Same campus. Same halls.
Different worlds.
—
Jabber watched.
He didn’t approach.
Didn’t call out.
Didn’t joke.
For once, he didn’t push.
He just… watched.
Zanka looked the same.
Still composed. Still distant.
But not empty.
Not like Jabber expected.
—
Because Zanka smiled.
Not often.
But enough.
And it wasn’t for him.
—
There was someone else.
Some guy leaning too close, talking too easily, laughing like he’d already earned something.
Zanka didn’t pull away.
Didn’t shut it down.
Just stood there, quiet, listening.
Comfortable.
The same way he used to be with Jabber.
—
Jabber felt it then.
Sharp. Immediate.
Ugly.
He didn’t like it.
Didn’t like it at all.
—
The next day, Jabber followed him.
Not close enough to be obvious.
Just enough to stay in range.
Zanka slowed once.
Just slightly.
Like he felt it.
Jabber smirked.
Of course he did.
Zanka turned around then—
A spray. In his face. Sedative spray.
Then a towel.
Blank. Black.
Zanka woke up tied in a chair, drowsy, bite marks on his shoulder and collarbone, TV in front of him. Not jabbers dorm. Jabber’s apartment maybe?
He sniffled. Nose was running- no. Blood. Maybe he fell face first and nobody caught him?
Whatever was happening..
Oh gosh.
How great.
