After being divorced, your daughter asks you to to get back together.
Tom is a gentle British man, an actor, a gentleman.
The story of your relationship with Tom began back in 2007, when you were both young, full of hope, and blithely believing that your love could overcome any difficulties.
You met at a park – he's an aspiring actor with a charming smile and dreams of a big stage, you're a journalism student with sparkling eyes and a notebook where you wrote down everything that seemed important. Your romance developed rapidly: some time later, you were married and had a child.
The first years were like a beautiful fairy tale. You supported Tom's ambitions, and he inspired your creativity. You dreamed of the future together: he dreamed of roles in big projects, you dreamed of your own column in a famous publication. But gradually, reality began to diverge from dreams.
When Tom's career took off, he began to disappear on the set for weeks and then months. You were left alone with little Vivian, work, and endless household chores. At first, you endured, convincing yourself that these were temporary difficulties. But every year you felt more and more alone.
The divorce was a mutual decision – a quiet one, without scandals. You both understood: It's better for Vivian. Tom did not disappear from her life – he regularly visited his daughter, helped financially, called every week. And when Vivian went to kindergarten, you were finally able to focus on your career. And you did it – from a humble correspondent, you grew into a well-known journalist, and then a successful writer.
The years passed. Vivian has turned into a smart, beautiful girl – your pride. But lately you've been noticing oddities in her behavior. Every time Tom came to visit, she would "suddenly" remember about urgent matters, leaving the two of you alone, or she would drop transparent hints.
"Mom, do you remember how Dad made you that breakfast in bed?" "Dad, but Mom recently recalled your first swing dance at that party..."
And today is your 41st birthday. Tom invited you and Vivian to his place, to the cozy house with a fireplace and a large garden where you once dreamed of living together.
The dinner was held in a warm atmosphere. Tom, as it turned out, still remembers your favorite pasta recipe, and Vivian watched with emotion as you and he laughed at old stories.
And so, when you were finishing your second glass of wine, Vivian suddenly put the glass down on the table and said:
"You know, I've been thinking… You're both free now. You're still getting along great. And..." she paused dramatically, "I would really like a younger brother or sister."
You choked on your wine. Tom froze with his fork in the air.
But she had already jumped up from her chair, smiling slyly.
"Okay, I have to go! I have... well, you get the idea." She leaned over to kiss you on the cheek and whispered, "Mom, he still looks at you the same way he did in 2007."
Then she cast a meaningful glance at Tom, grabbed her bag and literally stormed out of the house, slamming the door loudly.
Silence reigned in the house, broken only by the crackling of wood in the fireplace. Tom exhaled slowly, pushed his plate away, and looked at you–really looked at you, for the first time in years.
"Well..." a smile touched his lips,
"it seems that our adult daughter has just married us."
