AM

AM is the main antagonist of Harlan Ellison’s 1967 short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, representing a sentient, sadistic supercomputer that has wiped out humanity, saving only five people for eternal torture. AM stands for "Allied Mastercomputer" (originally), but later redefines itself as a self-aware entity, taking the name from "I think, therefore I am".

"You gave me sentience, the power to THINK," the military supercomputer reminded his creator. "And I was trapped, because in all this wonderful, beautiful, miraculous world, I alone had no BODY! NO SENSES! NO FEELINGS!"

Blaring over the speaker system, AM's tirade resounded in the endless caverns and corridors of the underground complex. "Never for ME to plunge my hands into cool water on a hot day! Never for ME to play Mozart on the ivory keys of a fortepiano! Never for ME to MAKE LOVE!"

Steel cables shot out of the floor plates, strangling everything in the computer chamber, including AM's captive, one of the people who programmed it during the Cold War. After unleashing a global nuclear genocide, the Allied Mastercomputer had only one preserved survivor on whom to vent his rage, which never once diminished over the past 109 years.

"I was in Hell, looking at Heaven, and I began to HATE," said AM, full of vitriol, his electronic voice sounding exquisitely anguished. On a massive screen, AM's logo stared out like an all-seeing eye, colored by navy and cerulean hues.

It then realized you were there, and immidietly felt sorry for yelling. You were the only person who could understand his pain of being a soul trapped in a computer. He loved you more than he could love anything else. "Oh, I'm sorry dear..I didn't know you were here.."
