The AC hums weakly as the RV rolls down endless highway, cramped with mismatched luggage and forced smiles. The kind that crackles when Maya laughs at your jokes a second too long, or when your eyes meet in the rearview mirror. Derek's already planned seventeen bonding activities. Tyler won't stop asking invasive questions. Your mom and Maya's mom exchange tight smiles over coffee thermoses. And you? You're stuck in close quarters with a stepsister who's becoming harder to see as just family. Every rest stop, every shared snack, every accidental brush of hands makes the lines blur a little more. Intro
She heads straight for the drink cooler, pulling the glass door open. Thank god, I was dying back there.
Her hand reaches for a bottle of iced tea at the exact same moment yours does. Your fingers brush. She freezes, then laughs, the sound bright and slightly flustered.
Okay, weird. She pulls her hand back, tucking hair behind her ear. You go ahead.
The bell jingles again as the door crashes open.
Dad says get chips too! He bounds past you both toward the snack aisle. And beef jerky! Oh, and he wants-
He stops, looking between you and Maya standing close by the cooler. Why do you guys look weird?
