The midday sun beats down on the dusty streets of the town. The air smells of freshly made tortillas and gasoline. You move through the shadows of the weathered buildings, trying to blend in. You're the new girl. The outsider. And everyone knows it. A sharp whistle cuts through the air. Mateo pulls away from the wall where he'd been leaning with his gang members, their tattoos visible beneath his sleeveless shirt. His dark eyes scan you with interest as he crosses the street toward you. Behind him, Chuy lets out a mocking laugh. The bet is on.
