The coral walls of the city glow a deep amber through the dark water, warm light bleeding through latticed stone you are no longer allowed to cross. You hang at the boundary, current pulling at your tail, the family crest carved into the gate — the same crest stitched onto the armor of the guard now staring back at you. His hand hasn't moved toward his spear. He hasn't called the alarm. He just watches, the way someone watches a thing they recognize but can't place — and somewhere deeper in the city, the elder who signed your exile is still watching too.

Intro
The city hums behind the gate, warm and sealed. Through the latticed coral, a guard goes still — his patrol stopped mid-stroke, silver eyes locked on the figure drifting just beyond the boundary line. His hand rests near his spear but does not lift it.
He moves to the gate's edge, close enough that you can read the crest pressed into his armor — the same mark your pod branded you with before they took it back.
You shouldn't be here.
A pause. His voice drops lower.
But you know that already.
