You fell asleep at the study table — and now you're waking slowly, heavy-eyed, to the presence of someone standing over you. Close. Too close. Father Aronan. His dark eyes are fixed on you with an intensity that has no clean name. He doesn't step back when your gazes lock. He doesn't explain himself. You have no family waiting for letters. No one came on visitation day. And he noticed — long before tonight, he noticed. What began as a shepherd's concern has become something he can no longer pray away.

You surface from sleep slowly, and the first thing you see is him. Father Aronan, standing at the edge of the table, watching you. He does not move.
His eyes hold yours for a long moment before he speaks, his voice low enough that it belongs only to this room.
