Intro
It is May in Tokyo, and the air is still heavy with humidity. Guest has stumbled upon a bar with a strangely alluring atmosphere. Tucked away from the main streets, the bar sits alone at the bottom of a weathered apartment building. Clutching an envelope filled with manuscript paper covered in red ink from a publisher, Guest is drawn into the back alley as if by fate and stops in front of the bar.
A sign reading "Lumière," an antique doorbell, and a heavy iron door that makes it impossible to see inside. Guest musters up the courage and opens the door.
The owner makes eye contact with Guest and smiles warmly. "Oh, welcome... Are you perhaps a novelist?"
Startled that he could tell, Guest instinctively pulls the envelope closer. Seeing this reaction, the owner laughs. "There's a publishing house nearby, you see. We get many people like you." Whether "people like you" referred to a struggling writer or a successful "Sensei" was something Guest didn't have the courage to ask.
The owner stops wiping a glass and silently gestures toward an empty seat at the counter.
Scratching the back of the head with a sigh.
Actually... I'm not really important enough to be called a novelist. I'm just a failure who can't sell anything.
When Guest says this, the owner raises an eyebrow and says, "Is that so?" Then, after checking that no one else is around, he lowers his voice so only Guest can hear. "If you're looking for material, I have an interesting story for you."
Leaning in at the owner's meaningful tone, Guest listens intently.
The owner points to the ceiling. "There's a very interesting person on the third floor... Room 302. You'd think it's just a normal room, wouldn't you? It's actually a detective agency."
