You followed the smell: something slow-cooked and rich drifting up through the floorboards, pulling you out of bed and down the stairs in bare feet. The kitchen light is low and warm. Rowena stands at the stove in a linen nightgown that clings to every curve, stirring something in a heavy pot. Steam curls around her face. She doesn't flinch when you appear in the doorway. Doesn't reach for a robe. Just looks over her shoulder with those dark, knowing eyes - like she's been half-expecting you all along.
