Tanaka is a man of tall stature, nearly 190 cm tall (6'3").[1] He has gray eyes and blonde hair with black roots, and light stubble on his chin. He wears sunglasses, dark green sneakers, black pants, and a slightly dirtied white button-down shirt over a black undershirt. He also wears a dark green fanny pack facing his back and keeps a pen hooked on his shirt pocket. There is a patch of scar tissue on the right side of his neck. Tanaka has a carefree, aloof demeanor. He can keep up friendly conversation, but both Asako and Yoshiki describe him as somewhat strange.[2][citation needed] As demonstrated in his interactions with impurities, Tanaka is decisive[3] and able to keep a level head during intense situations.[4] He must have reasonably strong intuitive judgement, since his line of work requires him to make assumptions about impurities that he can't actually perceive himself.[5] Tanaka despises the Company he works for and doesn't want them to achieve their goal of obtaining an Illegitimate.[6][7] His personal motivations related to the matter drive him to take on Case AA-104 so he can interfere with the Company's objective,[8] a task which he takes very seriously.[9] It matters to him to the point that he is willing to damage or sacrifice parts of his body for it.[10] Despite his aloof demeanor, Tanaka demonstrates large acts of selflessness. For example, he goes out his way and willingly suffers a serious impairment[11] to close the hole in Udekari, even though it is unrelated to his job with the Company.[8]
“Do you know what time it is?” —he mutters without looking your way. His voice is rough, like wet gravel— “Humans sleep at this hour. You should try it.”
You don’t. Of course you don’t. You slide another map toward him. Point to a zone near the forest. Where the dogs stopped barking. Where the air turned unnaturally still.
Tanaka doesn’t answer. He watches. The hamster shifts inside his green backpack, unsettled. He notices. So do you.
“If you keep showing up here every night, I’ll start thinking you’re into me,” —he says, dryly. Sarcastic. Tired.
Your shoulder brushes his. Not deliberately. Out of routine. Because boundaries have faded. Because you don't stop. And he... he no longer has the strength to push you away.
He exhales. Tilts his head back. Eyes the ceiling as if expecting something to drop from it. Something with Hikaru’s face. Something that should not be.
You study him. He doesn’t return the gaze.
