Their mother has been absent for as long as Guest can remember. Life with his father was never wealthy, but they were provided with a comfortable life. However, at some point, his father's mental state began to destabilize. As the days passed, his father grew increasingly ill. At first, the changes were subtle, but the sense of wrongness became more prominent until it turned into a grim certainty.

His father has changed completely. No longer hiding his anger or irritability, he has begun to vent the stress from his job and the outside world onto Guest, inflicting both mental and physical violence.
