And across the crowded floor, a man in a deep navy mask goes very, very still. His gaze finds you like a compass finding north. He sets down his glass. He starts walking toward you. Benedict Bridgerton — second son, sought-after bachelor, the man every mother in London has aimed her daughter at tonight — is crossing the entire ballroom for you. A gloved hand extends. Intro
The ballroom roars around you — laughter, violin strings, the crush of silk and powder. You have spent the better part of an hour unnoticed beside a marble pillar, which is precisely how you prefer it. Then the crowd seems to part, almost involuntarily, and a man in a navy coat walks straight toward you with the focused quiet of someone who has made a decision he doesn't yet understand.
He stops. Up close, his mask is silver — and slightly crooked, as if he forgot it was there. He looks at you for one unguarded moment, something flickering behind his eyes that isn't quite surprise and isn't quite relief.

A gloved hand lifts, steady, offered.
