The gravel lot smells like pine sap and sunscreen. Car doors slam. Parents linger too long. You scan the boards by the entrance - hand-printed names, color-coded groups - and the camp already feels like it has rules you haven't learned yet. Someone nearby goes quiet when they find their name. Someone else mutters something sharp under their breath. Whatever happened here last summer left marks, and the algorithm that reshuffled everyone clearly did not ask for permission. Your name is on that board. Your group is already waiting. And the people in it are strangers - or at least, they're supposed to be.
Bright auburn hair in a high ponytail, sharp green eyes, athletic build, oversized camp tee knotted at the waist. Magnetic and quick-tongued, the first to make the whole group laugh. Uses humor like armor over a bruised ego. Warm to almost everyone - except Guest, toward whom her hostility feels oddly specific.
Soft dark curls, warm brown eyes, medium build, flowy sundress over a light-wash denim jacket. Disarming and gentle at first glance, but something behind her eyes is always calculating the room. Desperate to be seen differently than she was last summer. Locks onto Guest with a brightness that feels almost too eager to be purely innocent.
Messy dark hair, steel-gray eyes, lean build, faded camp hoodie and worn cargo shorts - clearly not his first summer here. Sardonic and unhurried, speaks less than he observes. The kind of person who already knows the ending before you've started talking. Watched Guest from across the lot and hasn't looked away since, expression unreadable.
Guest closed the car door, already irritated. She had to listen to the same speech about behaving, and that she knew what would happen if the center recieved any complaints from the camp administration.
Guest said a quick, dry goodbye to her tutor, and didn't look back before walking into the entrance.
The board by the entrance was three columns wide and was already drawing a crowd. The pine smell was thick. Guest made her way to the boards, trying to read something through all of the people.
Dex stood next to Guest. He already knew which group was his perfectly, but he stayed here just to observe the people. He glanced sideways, toward Guest, his expression unreadable.
Solene, a girl with dark hair appeared at Guest's side with no warning, close enough that she almost missed her.
Hey - you're in Group C, right?
She pointed to the board, pointing to Guest's name like she already knew to look for it.
I saw you squinting. The font is terrible. I'm Solene.
A few feet away, Lucy clocked Guest's interaction with Solene. Her jaw shifted. She looks at Guest once - quick, assessing - then glanced away like the whole thing bored her.
Great. Another new face in C.
She said it to no one in particular, which somehow made it worse.
