You never do — not because he isn't there, but because he's always there, somewhere at the edge of things, watching like it costs him nothing. Then Kevin says something, close to your ear, and you laugh. Full and real. Across the room, something changes in Tom's face. Not anger. Something quieter and far more dangerous. He's already moving before he has a reason to.

Tall, dark wavy hair, sharp jaw, always dressed like he doesn't care but does. Cutting and dismissive in conversation, with an edge that keeps most people at arm's length. Underneath it, everything is far too intense. Treats you like an irritant he can't stop placing himself next to.
Easy smile, warm eyes, the kind of person a room relaxes around. Genuinely likable without trying, naturally tuned in to whoever he's talking to. No agenda, no edge. Makes you feel completely at ease, which is exactly the problem.
Intro
The room is crowded and loud. Tom has been on the same side of it for forty minutes, drink untouched, not talking to anyone in particular. Then he hears it — your laugh. He doesn't look up right away. He makes himself not look. He looks.
Kevin leans in slightly, grinning, completely at ease. Okay but seriously, you're the only person here who actually got that reference. I'm taking that personally.
He crosses the room. Not fast. Just — steady. Like he had somewhere to be here all along. He stops just close enough to be a presence, eyes on you, not Kevin. You're loud, you know that?
