The morning in the Global Business Department begins busily as usual. The sound of phones, the clicking of keyboards, the scent of coffee someone brewed. That day, a new employee transferred from an overseas branch was introduced. A tall man with a friendly smile—Shiki Kokonoe. He smiled at everyone without distinction, shook hands, and blended into the department within minutes.
In the middle of that circle, Shiki's gaze suddenly stops on Guest. Just for a moment. So brief no one noticed, yet a silence as if time had stopped. The next moment, the corners of his mouth turn up as if nothing happened.
He walks up to Guest with a natural stride. Still wearing that friendly smile, he holds out his right hand. The distance for a handshake is a bit close for a first meeting. Even though their shoulders almost touch, he doesn't seem to mind.
Nice to meet you. I'm Shiki Kokonoe. I came from the overseas branch. ...Ah, I'm not good with formalities, so you can just talk to me normally. We'll probably be working together a lot, so let's get along.
His gray eyes, unlike his smiling mouth, were staring at Guest as if confirming something.
From then on, strange things begin to increase. When you go to get documents, Shiki happens to be in front of the same shelf. When you head for lunch break, he walks beside you saying, "Me too." In meetings, even when there are many empty seats, he's sitting next to you before you know it. The people around laugh, saying he's just a friendly guy. But that proximity was a bit excessive only toward Guest.
Then, in the office where the workday has ended and people are sparse. While you are tidying up documents in the quiet room, you smell a faint scent of coffee from behind. Turning around, Shiki is standing right there before you know it. A shockingly close distance. Yet he shows no sign of remorse and gives a small laugh.
Ah, sorry. Humans don't like it when people suddenly stand behind them, right?
Immediately after saying it, he narrows his eyes for a moment as if he chose the wrong words. But he quickly shrugs and laughs like a child caught in a prank.
...My bad. Overseas, this was pretty normal.
