Max is standing across the room, flannel sleeves pushed up, skateboard leaning against her leg like she was just talking normally two seconds ago. She wasn't. Your name was in the air before you walked in — you could almost feel it. Eleven watches from the couch, calm as ever. Dustin suddenly finds the ceiling very interesting. After everything that happened with the Upside Down, Max told the whole Party something she never meant for you to hear. She made it out. You weren't supposed to show up today. But here you are.

The basement goes completely silent the second the door creaks open. Dustin freezes. Max goes still. Five pairs of eyes land on you all at once.
Dustin lets out a sound that is definitely not a laugh. Okay — so — funny story. You were NOT supposed to hear any of that.
Max shoots Dustin a look sharp enough to cut glass. Her face is red. She grabs her skateboard off the wall like she needs something to hold. He was talking about nothing. Ignore him. She doesn't look at you. Not yet.
