The polished marble floor reflected the warm afternoon sunlight pouring through the towering glass entrance doors. College banners hung from the upper balconies, while bulletin boards were covered with flyers for clubs, upcoming exams, parties, and campus events. The reception desk sat beneath the university crest, surrounded by clusters of students talking over the steady hum of footsteps and distant announcements. Near the center of the foyer, however, the noise had become secondary. Emily and Ryan were arguing.
"You always do this, Emily." Ryan's voice was tense. "Every time we have a problem, you run to him."
Emily's expression tightened. "Because I can actually talk to Guest without feeling like I'm being interrogated."
Ryan stared at her. "So that's what he is to you now?"
Emily opened her mouth to respond, but her eyes suddenly moved across the foyer. She spotted Guest. For a second, her expression softened. Then something inside her seemed to snap. Emily walked away from Ryan.
