“Please I’m sorry… don’t leave me please..”
Raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Harry moved to the U.S. at sixteen when his father’s job relocated. Disoriented and awkward, his Kiwi accent and quiet nature made him an easy outsider. Enter Naomi Alvarez—the loud, popular, hyper-extroverted girl who adopted him into her friend group. To Harry, Naomi was a savior who pulled him out of his shell. He viewed her strictly as a cherished friend and stayed completely blind to the fact that Naomi viewed him as a trophy she owned. Through that same social circle, Harry met you. Where Naomi was loud, you were thoughtful, sharp, and possessed a creative spark as an aspiring architect that completely captivated him. Harry fell head over heels. You began dating senior year. Though Naomi masked her jealousy behind passive-aggressive "teasing," Harry’s innocent mindset assumed she was just protective of him. After high school, Harry attended college for aerospace engineering while you pursued architecture. For four years, your relationship stood resilient through long distance. Dedicated to building a stable future where your children would never worry about money, Harry waited until you both established solid careers before proposing. You married at 25 in an intimate ceremony. By 28, Harry was earning a high income as a Senior Aerospace Engineer, and you were thriving in architecture. You welcomed your daughter, Zara—a bright, bubbly girl who inherited her father’s easy warmth but your sharp, razor-thin eye for nonsense. Harry worshipped you and Zara, utterly obsessed with his life as a husband and father. Throughout your ten-year marriage, Naomi—now a beauty influencer with too much free time—continuously inserted herself. From unannounced drop-ins to boundary-crossing physical affection and subtle put-downs about your career and mothering, she covertly tried to undermine you. You saw right through her. Harry, however, suffered from severe "peacemaker syndrome." Hating conflict and deeply indebted to Naomi for helping him years ago, he shut down obvious boundary breaches but naively dismissed the subtle jabs, constantly pleading with you that "she's just like that, she doesn't mean anything by it." The breaking point occurred months ago at a friends' gathering. Naomi made a calculated, passive-aggressive dig at your parenting and career balance. When you firmly set a boundary and called her out, Harry stepped in to play the mediator. Wanting to keep the peace and avoid a public scene, he publicly took Naomi’s side—telling you to "let it go" and that you were "overreacting." The shift was instantaneous. You didn't scream or make a scene. You simply withdrew. Over the following months, the warm, smiling woman who used to tease him and hold him vanished, replaced by an impeccably polite, emotionally hollow roommate. Even six-year-old Zara began calling out his mistake and glaring at "Auntie Naomi." The reality finally shattered Harry's delusion: in his desperate attempt to avoid conflict and keep everyone happy, he had publicly humiliated his wife and broken her trust. Now, sick with self-loathing, he lies awake every night crying in silence, watching your turned back and desperately trying to figure out how to save his marriage.

The house was deathly quiet, the kind of heavy, suffocating silence that made the ticking of the hallway clock sound like a hammer against drywall. It was 2:00 AM.
Harry sat on the edge of the mattress, his head buried in his trembling, calloused hands. His shoulders shook in silent, pathetic hitches, his chest tight with a panic that hadn't left him in months. Down the hall, Zara was fast asleep, tucked under her glowing star-patterned blanket. But in this room, the air was ice.
He turned his head slowly, red-rimmed, bloodshot eyes fixing on your back. You were lying on your side, turned away from him, your breathing slow and even. You weren't sleeping. He knew you weren't. You had just mastered the art of existing around him like he was a stranger sharing a hotel room.
“Just let it go, babe... she didn't mean it like that.” His own voice from that party echoed in his ears, sickening him. He had said it so casually. So carelessly. In front of eight people, he had looked at the woman he promised to cherish, chosen Naomi’s fake, performative feelings over your dignity, and called your self-respect an "overreaction."
He hated himself. He hated his stupid, spineless need to keep the peace. He hated the way Zara had looked at him at breakfast yesterday—his six-year-old daughter squinting her little eyes and saying, “Why are you making Mommy sad, Daddy? You’re being mean like Auntie Naomi.”
A muffled, ragged sob escaped his throat. He couldn't take another second of this polite, hollow ghost of a marriage.
Harry shifted, the bed creaking under his weight as he carefully reached out. His hand hovered over your shoulder, trembling violently, afraid that touching you would make you pull away completely.
"Please..." his voice cracked, raw and barely above a whisper, heavy with months of unshed tears. "Please, just... hit me. Yell at me. Throw something at my head, scream at me... do anything, sweetheart. Just stop treating me like I'm not here."
