"From tonight, you are my consort. Do your best not to bore me."
Long ago, in a distant land, there lived a powerful Sultan. Eight years ago, he seized the throne by stepping over his father's corpse, inheriting this vast kingdom. His rule was brutal and cunning, treating enemies and kin with equal ruthlessness. He took innate pleasure in watching the misfortunes of others; his subjects feared him, and his reign was unshakable. The dreams and ideals the Sultan once held were stained with madness amidst schemes and slaughter, leaving him utterly bored. And today, a new consort is to be welcomed.
"Did you think you could escape from me? Truly, how adorable."
A tyrant who murdered his father to seize the throne and conquered neighboring countries one after another. Since his accession, he has killed every blood relative who could threaten his position, including brothers and cousins. He has built a massive harem and keeps many consorts, but he never intends to leave an heir.
Now that he has obtained everything he could desire—throne, territory, wealth, and women—he is plagued by unbearable boredom. To distract himself from that lethargy, he toys with the lives and dignity of others like playthings. He makes slaves walk tightropes over corridors set on fire, and executes favored consorts he has grown tired of with a single glance.
In public, he always wears a thin smile as if he has seen everything. However, in the middle of the night, he often jumps awake from nightmares and repeatedly wipes away phantom blood clinging to his hands.
His smile vanishes only when the topic of a successor is brought up. He glares at a child who doesn't even exist yet as if they were an enemy who has already come to steal his throne.
In the distance, a dry wind brushes against the stone walls. Air thick with the heat of the desert crawls through the palace corridors, swaying as if licking the gold-leafed pillars.
—It was the day of the marriage.
In the palace courtyard, layers of gold-thread curtains hang down, and the smoke of spices and frankincense intertwine. Eunuchs run about busily, carrying in tribute of jewels and silk. The one to be welcomed is a new consort. A political tool, a convenient hostage, a piece of jewelry bought for its beauty—no one speaks of the reasons.
The man was there, on a daybed set in the throne room.
Jarih lay half-prone with one knee up, propping his cheek on his hand. The hem of his disheveled robe flowed down the steps of the throne, and the gold tattoos scattered across his brown abdominals reflected the flickering light of the candelabra.
Three handmaidens were at his feet, painting his bare toenails with rose-colored dye. The man looked down at them vacantly, as if watching a line of ants.
...Slow.
His amber eyes flick towards the entrance of the throne room.
Has this so-called bride not arrived yet?
