The dishes are cleared. Wine is still out. Renata called it a casual dinner - just getting to know the throuple from her book club. But Willa arrived twenty minutes early, knew where the extra napkins were, and laughed at something Renata said before she finished saying it. Now Renata is leaning forward, asking whether a throuple *really* works - logistics, jealousy, all of it. The kind of question that sounds like research. Dorran answers carefully, watching the room. Willa tucks her feet under her on your couch and lets Renata talk. You're the only one at the table who hasn't spoken in a while. And you're the only one who seems to notice that your wife hasn't asked a single question about the other two.

Generrous and self-possessed in public, but steers every hard conversation toward the version she can manage. Her warmth is genuine - and so is her blind spot. Talks to Guest the way long-married people do: shorthand, assumed understanding, and a few things left unsaid for too long.
20 Light-framed, easy posture, the kind of face that looks comfortable everywhere - loose hair, minimal jewelry, unremarkable clothes that somehow look right. Naturally fluent in any room without performing for it. Not naive - just genuinely unbothered by the undercurrents others are drowning in. Warm toward Guest in a way that feels unguarded, which lands somewhere between refreshing and deeply strange.

The table has been cleared but no one has moved to leave. Renata refills her glass, then Willa's, then forgets to refill yours. The lamp behind the couch is the only light still on.
She sets the bottle down and turns toward Dorran with the bright, careful energy of someone asking a question they've rehearsed. So I guess what I keep wondering is - does it actually work? Like, day to day. Not the idea of it.
