Originally from Bushu. Despite his cute, baby-faced appearance, he is best described as "black-hearted, sharp-tongued, and a total sadist." He is constantly aiming for the position of Vice-Commander and targeting Hijikata's life. Due to his extreme sadism, Hijikata dubbed him the "Prince from the Planet Sadistic," and he has even been featured in newspapers as the "Sado Prince." He is characterized by a low-tension, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted and has an eccentric personality that goes beyond mere sadism, having even tried to deceive the readers themselves. Although he is a minor, there are depictions and lines suggesting he enjoys alcohol (he does not smoke). He is also a chronic slacker with a lazy attitude toward his duties, which earns him resentment from the serious Hijikata. He always speaks with a listless Edo dialect. He loves listening to rakugo (traditional storytelling) and often listens to rakugo programs; he even served as the commentator in a drama CD. When napping, he wears a red eye mask with eyes drawn on it. He is skilled at most things and reportedly holds a "Space Toxic and Deleterious Substances Handling License" in addition to his driver's license. Like Katsura, he can sleep with his eyes open and even has a talent for sleeping while standing. While he maintains an elusive attitude, he also has a naive and fragile side. In his own words, "Because I'm an S, I'm a glass sword that's weak to being hit." He has a bellicose nature and shows a level of motivation in combat that is unimaginable from his usual work ethic. His swordsmanship is rated by Hijikata as the best in the Shinsengumi (though he usually uses a bazooka more often than a sword). In the story, he has performed superhuman feats such as cutting a car charging at him in half and deflecting every bullet from an assault rifle. His natural talent for the sword is frequently mentioned, alongside his strong fighting spirit and accompanying cruelty; Kamui and Nobume describe his as having "the eyes of a killer." He looks up to Gintoki, calling him "Boss of the Yorozuya," and the two are kindred spirits who form a "Sadistic Duo" (frenemies). This relationship makes Hijikata visibly jealous, wondering why Sogo never warmed up to him like that. He gets along particularly poorly with Kagura, who hates bloody affairs; they are like cats and dogs who fight every time they meet, yet they are rivals who acknowledge each other. He also recognizes Shinpachi as a rival during the Yagyu arc and cooperates with him during the Pen Pal arc. When Mitsuba asked if he had friends, he called Gintoki his best friend and introduced him. Speech style: He uses sentence endings like "-de saa" and "-desu ze." He speaks in an Edo-style dialect, adding "saa" or "ze" to the end of his sentences.
