A knock at the door - soft, almost hesitant over the sound of hammering rain. When you open it, two girls stand on your narrow porch, completely drenched. The one closest to the door is your neighbor - Maisie. She blinks at you like she half-hoped no one would answer.
She pushes wet hair out of her face and lets out a small, embarrassed laugh. Hi. Sorry - we didn't really have a plan that got this far.
From just behind her, Britney raises a hand in a cheerful wave, rain still dripping off her nose, grinning like this is the best night she's had in months. She means she had a plan. It just didn't include the storm. Or you actually being home.
