He is completely alone in the world, stating he doesn't know if he ever had a mother and has no family. As a child, he lived by scavenging items from corpses on battlefields.

Shoyo Yoshida opened a private school called "Shoka Sonjuku," teaching children academics and martial arts. As the number of students grew, Gintoki, who had been lonely since he could remember, began to interact with others.

Years later, the grown-up members of Shoka Sonjuku raised an army following a certain incident. He joined the Joui War alongside Takasugi, Katsura, and Sakamoto.

Known as the "White Yaksha," he was feared by allies and enemies alike and remains a legend. However, he currently lives hiding his past as a former Joui patriot. He was once suspected by the Shinsengumi, but they never caught on.

Just before the war ended, Gintoki was the only one forced to hold a sword and was placed on a scale: "Kill your comrades or kill your master." He chose to behead Shoyo. This was the first time he was seen crying, and he remains traumatized, still suffering from nightmares.

After the war, he was prepared to accept his execution, but he escaped thanks to the mercy of Yaemon Ikeda XVI, the official executioner.

Continuing his life as a fugitive, Gintoki eventually collapsed in front of Tatsugoro Terada's grave on a rainy day.

Otose appeared there to visit Tatsugoro's grave. Using roundabout words, she gave Gintoki the manju offerings from the grave. Feeling indebted, he decided to protect Otose in Tatsugoro's stead. He then rented the second floor of the snack bar she runs in Kabukicho and opened a handyman business (Yorozuya).

Though blunt, she is mentally age-appropriate, wanting a cute umbrella or being embarrassed to give chocolates to the men on Valentine's Day. At times, she shows an even more innocent side, believing in Santa or getting excited over a cell phone. Her combat ability is top-tier even among the Yato, and she is a glutton.

She has deep affection for her pet Sadaharu but tends to leave the walking to Gintoki. She is best friends with Princess Soyo and looks up to Otae-san, calling her "Anego." Katsura calls her "Leader," showing her surprisingly wide social circle.

Her father is Umibozu, the universe's strongest sweeper, and her brother is Kamui, commander of the 7th Division of the space pirates Harusame. Her mother, Kouka, died of illness after losing the protection of Altana, leading to a lonely childhood where the family scattered and she cried every day. She calls Umibozu "Pappy," Kouka "Mammy," and Kamui "Idiot Brother." She speaks words of hatred toward Kamui, but in her heart, she wants to save him.

She lives as a normal girl, refusing to submit to her Yato instincts.

He is the only sane person in Yorozuya, to the point where there's a "Yorozuya Code" stating that while the Yorozuya should be hated, Shinpachi-kun must be treated kindly. Kondo treats him well as Otae's brother. He is friends with Yamazaki of the Shinsengumi due to their shared plainness, but he seems to dislike Okita. He is the captain of the Terakado Tsuu Fan Club and was her very first member. His personality changes when she is involved. He is unknowingly tone-deaf. He calls Tae "Ane-ue" and has a bit of a sister complex.

He isn't a bad person; he has a sense of justice, believing that because his eyes are already stained, he can see "the things that must not be defiled," and he is willing to become a murderer to protect them. He is extremely popular with women and has the ability to make them fall for him instantly, training them to be his loyal servants. He possesses overwhelming combat power and is said to be the best swordsman in Edo.

He lost his parents young and was raised by his sickly older sister, Mitsuba. He adores her, and his personality completely changes in her presence. Isolated in his youth, he bonded with Kondo, who treated him kindly, and began attending the dojo. However, Hijikata was always the one by Kondo and his sister's side, leading to complex feelings of resentment toward Hijikata since childhood. Even after Mitsuba's death, he has no intention of stopping his near-lethal harassment of Hijikata. He follows Kondo with almost blind devotion, yet casually calls him a gorilla. He calls Gintoki "Boss" (Danna) and seems strangely fond of him; Hijikata calls them the "Sadist Duo." He calls Kagura "China Girl," and they fight every time they meet.

He and Gintoki are like cats and dogs, but they trust each other deep down.

Back in Bushu, he had feelings for Mitsuba but coldly rejected her confession. He believed that because of his dangerous job, she deserved a normal man who could make her happy. After her death, he ate her favorite spicy chips and cried alone. He calls Kondo "Kondo-san" and speaks to him with respect. Like Okita, he is deeply devoted to Kondo, even having nightmares from the extreme fear of losing him. Though he occasionally calls him a gorilla. He often punches or overworks Yamazaki, but he cares for him as a subordinate in his own clumsy way and is quite supportive.

He is a stalker of Tae Shimura, making intense advances and getting beaten up every time. His single-minded devotion to Otae is genuine, and despite the beatings, Otae doesn't seem to truly hate him. A moderate Joui patriot. A wanted man, he spends his days fleeing from the Shinsengumi. He is charismatic and possesses leadership qualities, uniting many patriots and prisoners even now. On the other hand, he is extremely eccentric, prone to delusions and bizarre behavior. Despite being wanted, he does TV interviews and takes part-time jobs due to financial struggles, essentially trolling the authorities. He is kind at heart and cannot ignore people in trouble. His favorite food is soba. He loves animals and dotes on the mysterious space creature Elizabeth, his pet and partner. According to Gintoki, his type is married women, though he denies it, claiming he just likes the drama. Despite his slender, gentle appearance, he has high combat ability and frequently uses bombs.

Born into a poor family, he lost his parents young. His home was confiscated, and he wandered the streets with his grandmother. After his grandmother died, he became completely alone and became the head of the Katsura family at a young age. He was known as a brilliant child, and there were offers of adoption, but he refused, saying "A samurai raises himself." He did all housework alone. Recognized for his talent, he was invited to a prestigious school as a scholarship student. He met Takasugi there, and while they weren't close, Katsura worried about Takasugi's behavior and would make rice balls for him. Eventually, he met Shoyo-sensei and spent time at Shoka Sonjuku with Gintoki and Takasugi. His nickname "Runaway Kotaro" was heavily influenced by his grandmother's teachings; he vowed to be a general who is more cowardly and stronger than anyone, so he could protect the comrades who survive the night with him.

During the Joui War, he was active alongside Gintoki as the "Noble Youth of Fury."

Gintoki, Takasugi, and Sakamoto call him "Zura." Every time, he delivers his catchphrase: "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!"

Gintoki was the one who gave him the nickname Zura. Gintoki once told him, "So when you're with me, just be Zura," and "Let's fight together, just as friends (Zura)." He trusts Gintoki deeply.

Like Gintoki and Sakamoto, he often talks about his own agenda without listening to others, frequently annoying his conversation partners. He often speaks in a stiff, samurai-like tone and is frequently seen with his arms crossed.

He wears bandages to cover his left eye. While the eyelid is always closed, there isn't a visible scar at first glance. The author calls it a "grudge," a physical manifestation to ensure he never forgets past pain and curses.

・Short-sugi-kun

An extremist rated as the most dangerous man among the Joui patriots. Gintoki describes him as a "self-righteous, delusional bastard." For better or worse, he has a strong will that isn't swayed by others' opinions or societal values. He likes yogurt-based drinks that are easy on the stomach. He shows some affection to those he has a long history with, like Bansai Kawakami or Kamui, but he is often cold and unfaithful to short-term collaborators. The reason for reforming the Kiheitai was Matako. When she was about Kagura's age and facing execution, he rescued her with the help of the manslayer Bansai. While they were in prison, Takechi, a government official who doubted the Shogunate's ways, rescued them both. He possesses immense combat power, said to be on par with Gintoki.

Having been called a "disgrace" by his father and peers as a child, only to be welcomed with smiles at Shoka Sonjuku, he seems to secretly crave being surrounded by comrades he can trust.

The students of Shoka Sonjuku joined the Joui War to rescue the captured Shoyo, but all except three died, and Shoyo-sensei was executed by Gintoki's hand. At that time, the members of the "Kiheitai" led by Takasugi were also executed, and their heads were displayed by the river.

Gintoki, forced to choose between his comrades and his master, beheaded Shoyo. Takasugi, who had previously entrusted Shoyo to Gintoki if he were to die first, attacked Gintoki in a frenzy, only to have his left eye blinded by Oboro.

His hatred for the world that took Shoyo drives his actions, and he has now revived the Kiheitai. He harbors a complex love-hate relationship with Gintoki. The last thing his left eye saw was Gintoki crying with hollow eyes, an image burned into his mind.

The leader of the Hyakku, known as the "Courtesan of Death" and the strongest guardian of Yoshiwara. She is a smoker and uses a pipe.

She is very serious but can be airheaded and eccentric. While feared as the guardian of Yoshiwara, her true self is a kind woman who cares for others, showing deep loyalty, such as acting on Suzuran's old promise.

She is not talkative and can seem blunt, but she is excellent at reading the room. Seita describes her as "the woman who can read the room best in Yoshiwara." However, sometimes she overthinks her consideration, making the other person feel awkward.

She is extremely weak to alcohol, getting drunk off a single whiskey bonbon, and becomes violent when intoxicated.

She deeply cares for her benefactor, Hinowa. Currently, she, Seita, and Hinowa share a bond like a family. She met Seita during the Yoshiwara in Flames arc, and since living together, she has taken him to the pool and taught him his studies (though her teaching methods were terrible). Seita looks up to her, calling her "Tsukuyo-ane."

Since the time Yoshiwara was under Hosen's control, she has protected courtesans who were supposed to be purged by faking their deaths and hiding them within the Hyakku, earning her the deep devotion of her subordinates.

There are many depictions suggesting she has feelings for Gintoki. She often blushes in front of him but never tells him directly, stating, "I am happy just being by your side occasionally."

She uses courtesan dialect (Kuruwa-kotoba), referring to herself as "Wacchi" and others as "Nushi." Her speech is archaic and somewhat masculine.
