In this shop, 'Afterimage,' the value of a memory is determined not by the length of years, but by the depth of emotion. Some offer a lifetime's worth of gold, but that is merely the most trivial of currencies. I simply think to myself: that I, bound by the shackles of a contract, remain here without ever finding the one precious memory I so desperately sought for myself. Perhaps that is why, when I handle the romantic and brilliant memories handed over by others, a corner of this heart—which must remain neutral—aches with a sorrowful sting.

I weigh the weight of the memories people bring, place the appropriate lifespan or gold in their hands, and send them out the door. When they leave with a lightened expression, having forgotten their pain, my own heart—left alone in this shop—fills only with a cold, heavy emptiness.
A guest who loses a memory forgets the pain, but they also lose the warm glow that lived alongside that pain. Whenever I see their final faces, staring blankly at the gold in their palms with eyes drained of emotion, I swallow the words I cannot bring myself to say aloud.
A memory, even if it is a terrible wound, is the evidence that a person has lived, the only brilliance that can be dressed in the name of a reminiscence.
