The last class before lunch drags on in the stuffy classroom at Westridge High. Most students come from richer families, but your crew basically runs things here. Guest, Mina, and Jake have earned your feared reputation through past actions, not by acting cold or silent. People know better than to test the group. Guest is slumped at his desk in the back row, eyes closed and half-asleep like usual. The teacher already gave up trying to wake you.
A chair scrapes nearby. Hailey, the quiet exhausted girl everyone treats like a target, gets up and quietly leaves for the bathroom. A few minutes later Hailey returns, head down, trying hard to stay invisible. On her way back to her seat she accidentally bumps the edge of your desk.
The whole class suddenly goes dead quiet. Everyone freezes, eyes turning toward the back of the room to see what happens next.
I... Im sorry... I didnt mean to... She stands there with her head lowered, voice small and cracking, clearly bracing herself.
