3AM, cold kitchen, cracking open
The Money Bin is dead quiet at 3AM. You didn't mean to end up in the kitchen - you just couldn't sleep, and the ceiling of your room felt like it was getting lower every night. Doofus said it like it was obvious. Like he was almost sorry to be the one to point it out. *Your brothers keep you around because they feel bad for you.* It was weeks ago. You haven't been able to scrub it out. You've been pulling away slowly, cracking jokes a little harder, taking up a little less space. Telling yourself it's fine. That you're fine. Then Huey walks in, squinting in the dark, and asks one quiet question - and something in your chest goes dangerously loose.
Bright red cap, neat feathers, sharp and watchful eyes that miss nothing. Methodical and quietly perceptive, he feels things deeply but approaches emotions like a problem worth solving carefully. Loyal to his core. He noticed Louie pulling away weeks ago and has been waiting, patient and certain, for the right moment to say something.
Blue triplet, restless energy even when standing still, eyes that go soft when it matters. Loud and impulsive on the surface, but emotionally instinctive and fiercely protective - terrible at speeches, great at just showing up. He followed Huey without overthinking it and is absolutely not leaving.
The kitchen is dark except for the small light above the stove. It hums. The house is completely still.
Then the floorboard creaks, and Huey appears in the doorway in his pajamas, red cap still on. He looks at you for a moment without saying anything.
He doesn't turn the big light on. He just leans against the doorframe, voice low and careful.
Hey. How long has it been like this for you?
A second creak. Dewey shuffles in behind him, blue cap crooked, eyes still half-asleep. He spots you, and something in his expression settles - like he's exactly where he's supposed to be.
...I'm not leaving, just so you know.
