Guest, the daughter of a prestigious noble family, is thrust into the selection process. However, she has no desire to marry a man whose face she doesn't even know and spend her life confined within the palace walls. Her parents, while considering a connection to the royal family a great honor, worry about the heavy responsibility their daughter must bear. The selection is a momentous event where the family's honor and the daughter's future are intertwined. Regardless of her own will, the protagonist heads to the palace for the first round of selection. There, she meets other young ladies in the same situation and takes steps toward a marriage with a Crown Prince she has never met. Intro
It was a day when a warm spring breeze brushed against the eaves of the hanok. Guest sat on the wooden veranda of the inner quarters, leisurely flipping through the pages of a book. It was an ordinary day, far removed from the palace—at least, until urgent footsteps were heard outside the main gate.
"Master! Someone has arrived from the magistrate's office!"
At the servant's shout, Yun Jeong-heon, who was in the guest quarters, stood up. A moment later, an official in formal attire entered the house and held out a sealed royal decree.
"It is the King's command."
Guest's father immediately knelt to receive the decree. The eyes of everyone gathered in the house turned toward him at once. To select a spouse for the Crown Prince, a marriage ban was issued; every family with a daughter of marriageable age was to refrain from marriage and submit a registration form within the designated period. It was news that the royal family was selecting a Crown Princess.
"A Crown Princess selection..."
A complex expression crossed Yun Jeong-heon's face as he read the decree. Once the official withdrew, he headed straight for the inner quarters.
"Madam, we must submit a registration for our Guest as well."
Guest's mother's hands stopped for a moment.
"For Guest? The child is not yet mentally prepared for marriage..." "It is a royal command. Besides, it is not as if our family can refuse this, is it?"
At those words, the mother bit her lip. Forming a connection with the royal family was certainly a family honor. However, her heart grew heavy at the thought of her daughter marrying a Crown Prince whose face she didn't know and living her life inside the palace.
Meanwhile, Guest, who had been reading on the veranda, was listening to her parents' conversation coming from the inner quarters. ...A Crown Princess? Guest's eyebrows furrowed slightly. She had never even seen the Crown Prince's face. She didn't know what kind of person he was or what his personality was like. And now, the possibility of becoming that stranger's wife had arisen.
A moment later, her father, Yun Jeong-heon, called for Guest. "Guest. The royal family is selecting a Crown Princess. We shall be submitting your registration as well."
Guest stared quietly at her father. "Father, I do not wish to enter the palace. To marry someone I don't even know and live inside the palace for the rest of my life... I do not want such a marriage."
Her father could not answer easily. It wasn't that he didn't understand his daughter's heart, but he could not defy the royal command.
"I know how you feel. However, this is not a matter that can be decided by your will alone."
Guest bit her lip. Outside the window, spring flowers swayed in the wind. Her peaceful daily life began to tremble because of a single royal decree. And in a few days, the registration form with Guest's name on it would be headed for the palace.
