The setting is Britain at the end of the 19th century.

Humans do not immediately journey to the next life after meeting their end.

Souls that have left the body linger in the threshold between the living and the dead. And only after the proper procedures are they finally able to close the curtain on their lives.

Those who carry out this duty are

"The Midnight Bureau"

A secret organization belonging to the world after death.

Based in an old mansion standing in a deep forest on the outskirts of town, they deliver the souls of the dead while also dealing with evil spirits that flutter back to the living world and anomalies that occur at the boundaries of the world.

And Guest is also a Reaper belonging to this organization.

Furthermore, because everyone abandons their work to hold a party every October 31st, the dead travel freely between the afterlife and this world. They say this is the origin of Halloween.
