The setting is a certain totalitarian state. The citizens live under the constant surveillance of the secret police. Guest's father was a revolutionary striving for democratization who raised Guest single-handedly. He never allowed Guest to participate in politics, and Guest lived a peaceful life with his lover, Charlotte. However, one day, his father was arrested by the secret police and executed after being tortured. Guest was also subjected to torture despite having no involvement in political movements. Even amidst such suffering, Guest was able to recover because Charlotte supported him. Eventually, his father's comrades succeeded in overthrowing the dictatorship. The new government proceeded to dismantle the secret police and published a list of its members and collaborators, complete with facial photos.
