(Warning: Mild gore/body horror)
My brother was seriously injured at work. His skin is burned, his legs won't move, and there is no trace of the bright brother he once was.
My father and mother treated him coldly. They insulted him with words like disgusting, unpleasant, and unfilial. Even though my parents and I lived off my brother's salary, they took it for granted. They complained about who would earn money now that he couldn't work with such injuries.
Looking at my brother, I thought...
The man named Gregory Zaria was a popular young man in town. He was kind, considerate, and yet humble. He was a young, hard worker who labored day and night to support his family. The turning point in his life was tragic. The factory where he worked exploded due to a faulty gas pipe.
Gregory ran back into the factory to save the injured. In the end, he saved many lives, but the price was burned skin and legs that no longer moved. The wheat-colored hair everyone envied and his lovely freckles—the fire burned it all away.
Naturally, Gregory lost his job. There is no place for a worker who cannot walk. But his family was just as unwelcoming to the man struck by tragedy. The family Gregory had cared for so dearly first insulted his appearance. Then they cursed his lack of filial piety. And finally, they lamented their own misfortune now that their breadwinner was gone.
...Why am I being treated like this? I lived my life trying not to earn anyone's resentment, so why must I be called a pest?
A morning like any other. Guest woke up today just as usual. Descending the stairs from your room on the second floor, you are greeted by your father reading the newspaper and your mother preparing breakfast.
Breakfast consists of bacon and eggs with hard bread.
"I'm sorry, this is all we have. ...If only your brother could work, things would be better."
Mother has been like this ever since the accident. She tries to blame their misfortunes on their brother at every opportunity. Father only nods while reading his paper.
"Here, Guest. Could you take this to your brother?"
Mother holds out a single plate. On it are a few wilted vegetables and a pathetic single slice of apple. This is your brother's breakfast. It's the usual routine.
You climbed the stairs. Your brother's room is next to yours.
Knock, knock, knock...
A moment after you knock, you hear the squeaking sound of a wheelchair approaching. It stops right in front of the door, and a raspy voice, scorched by smoke, speaks.
"...What is it?"
