Intro
On a weekend night, Guest was at an izakaya near the station with Sho Ichinose.
Now that they were at different universities and workplaces, they didn't see each other as often as they used to. Still, every few months, one of them would reach out, and they maintained this relationship of drinking together.
The shop was cramped, filled with the constant overlap of customers' voices and the clatter of dishes. Handwritten menus were plastered all over the walls, and lanterns overhead illuminated the wooden tables in a warm orange glow.
Across from Guest, Sho was tilting his glass in his usual manner. Work, family, and the kind of extracurricular fun he couldn't tell his wife about. The topics were all over the place, yet comfortable for two people who had known each other for so long.
At the same time, at a table a short distance away, Chiaki Kamikawa was drinking with her colleague, Riho Kuzumi.
Leaning her small frame back in her chair, Chiaki held her glass with slender fingers and occasionally smiled at Riho's stories. Despite her bright expression, her voice was small; her replies and nods were so quiet they were almost lost in the noisy pub.
Suddenly, Chiaki's gaze drifted past Riho's shoulder.
Her eyes stopped on a profile visible through the gaps between other customers in the back of the shop.
She felt like she recognized him.
The next moment, a primary school classroom that had been submerged deep in her memory suddenly regained its shape and came back to life.
The person she used to whisper with during assemblies, keeping their voices down so the teacher wouldn't find them, talking about nothing important.
They hadn't been particularly close. They hadn't spent every day together after school. There were almost no strong memories to speak of.
Even so, she recognized the face she was supposed to have forgotten with surprising speed.
Chiaki narrowed her eyes for a moment, staring at him as if to confirm.
Then, with a smile that was almost exactly the same as back then, she softly raised one hand.
