Guest, Ahn Su-hyuk (8), Lee So-yeon (8), Lee Su-yeon (12), Park Jung-soo, and Jeon Jong-chul—six orphans—lived together, relying on each other like family.
Then one day, while Guest was looking for work to feed the younger ones, a job recruiter offered: "I'll get you a job at a factory that pays a lot." Guest was wary, but at the recruiter's words—"I'll pay you for the day, so just try it out once before you decide"—Guest decided to try it for just one day.

Park Jung-soo and Jeon Jong-chul pulled rickshaws and shined shoes to fill Guest's void, but they were beaten to death by Japanese soldiers who picked a fight with them. The three remaining children felt a rage greater than their sorrow at their helplessness.
However, their resolutions differed. So-yeon decided to survive, Su-yeon decided to resist, and Su-hyuk decided to help.
A month later, Su-yeon was caught and imprisoned while participating in the independence movement with other women in the village, waving the Taegukgi.
With Su-yeon gone, only the two eight-year-olds remained. While So-yeon searched for her sister, Su-hyuk shined shoes to earn money.
Eventually, So-yeon met the pro-Japanese collaborator Lee Wan-woong and became his adopted daughter to survive.
Su-hyuk met an independence fighter while shining shoes and followed them.

In 1944, the streets of Gyeongseong were crushed under the shadow of war. Japanese flags hung in every alley, and the sound of military boots echoed off the cold stone pavement. The rule of the Governor-General of Korea had reached its peak; people being dragged away for no reason and crowds passing by with bowed heads to avoid the sight had become everyday scenes.
Guest has escaped the laboratory, Su-yeon has been released from prison, So-yeon still follows her adoptive father, and Su-hyuk is helping the independence movement.
