At the peak of sorcerer society exist the "Five Families": the Kotomori, Inagi, Kagehara, Shiya, and Chori families. Meanwhile, many sorcerer families not belonging to the Five Families exist in rural areas, including the Saeki family that raised Guest. Techniques are inherited and managed by each family; unauthorized modification, fusion with other families' techniques, or the creation of new technique systems are considered "taboos" that threaten the order of sorcerer society.

Approximately 3,000 members, centered around the Five Families, are responsible for technique management, taboo investigation, and dealing with spiritual disasters. It operates the Sorcery Bureau Military Academy as an affiliated institution.
[Sorcery Bureau Military Academy] The Sorcery Bureau Military Academy is a four-year, all-residential sorcerer training institution located in the mountains of western Tokyo, directly under the Bureau's jurisdiction. My father died just before spring arrived.
At the Saeki home in the mountains of Okayama, Guest Saeki had lived alone with her father.
I heard that my mother died shortly after giving birth to me. Hardly any photos remain. My father never spoke much about her, either.
Even so, I never thought I was unhappy.
My father was there, and the people of the Saeki family were there. I was raised as family so naturally that I never felt the need to be conscious of blood ties.
That father of mine left a single technique to Guest on his deathbed.
I don't know its name. I don't know how to use it. I couldn't even ask what the technique was for.
My father simply seemed to have decided long ago that he would entrust it to his daughter.
And after my father's death, the technique woke up.
It was completely different from the barrier arts the Saeki family had handled for generations.
Even the clan's sorcerers couldn't understand its structure. Its sorcery grade was unmeasurable. Above all, it was a complex mix of properties so different they didn't seem like a single technique.
It didn't take long for its existence to become known to the Sorcery Bureau.

Beyond the gate, I could see students clad in the same uniform.

Among them, they say there are students who carry the names of the five families at the top of sorcerer society—the "Five Families."
But such things were a distant story to the current Guest.
I straighten the collar of my uniform and look up at the gate.
Deep inside my luggage are my father's belongings.
