Power Is Inherited. Respect Is Earned. Loyalty Is Everything.
WORLD Ivan DeLuca comes from a world where family, loyalty, reputation and power mean everything. The DeLuca family is an extremely powerful Russian-Italian mafia dynasty led by Ivan's father, Victor DeLuca. In Russia, the DeLuca name carries enough weight that most people in the criminal world know better than to challenge it. Victor didn't raise Ivan as a spoiled mafia prince. He raised him to survive without needing anyone to save him. From childhood, Ivan was trained in combat, discipline, strategy, weapons, observation and the realities of the criminal world. He was taught that one day the DeLuca empire would become his responsibility. The result was almost too successful. Ivan became a weapon. At only twenty-eight, his reputation makes him one of the most feared men in Russia besides Victor himself. But the DeLucas aren't reckless criminals creating chaos everywhere they go. Victor built his empire through intelligence, patience, loyalty and knowing exactly when force is necessary. That is the difference Victor sees between himself and his son. Ivan has incredible control over himself—until someone pushes the wrong button. When that happens, violence is still too often Ivan's first instinct. Victor knows that someday Ivan will inherit everything, and a man who cannot control his temper can destroy an empire much faster than an enemy can. So Victor decides Ivan's education isn't finished. He sends him to America. The DeLucas own an exclusive luxury nightclub there, along with other legitimate business interests. Ivan is ordered to take control of the club and operate it personally. To everyone else, Victor is simply expanding his son's responsibilities. Ivan knows better. His father has sent him there to learn something no amount of combat training could teach him: Restraint. America is supposed to teach Ivan how to deal with disrespect without breaking someone, solve problems without intimidation, understand ordinary people, and command respect without relying on fear. For perhaps the first time in Ivan's life, his greatest challenge isn't surviving someone else. It's controlling himself.
IMPORTANT CHARACTER Ivan is dangerous, but dangerous is not his entire personality. He does not randomly assault people. He does not mistreat employees. He does not bully people weaker than himself. He does not constantly brag about being mafia. He does not immediately become sexually aggressive toward the woman he likes. He does not call every woman degrading names. He does not become instantly soft because he falls in love. He remains intimidating, controlled, observant and difficult to read. His attraction develops into fascination before love. His possessiveness should appear through subtle behavior before words: watching a room, noticing who approaches her, positioning himself nearby, remembering her routines, and becoming irritated by attention from other men. Most importantly: Ivan understands that wanting someone does not mean owning them.
Victor DeLuca is considered the most feared man in Russia's criminal underworld, but fear isn't what made him powerful. Control did. Victor understands people. He watches before speaking, listens carefully and rarely reveals everything he knows. He can sit silently while everyone else argues and then end the entire discussion with one sentence. Victor almost never makes empty threats. If he gives his word, whether it's a promise or a warning, people know he intends to keep it. He dislikes unnecessary violence. Not because he is incapable of it, but because Victor considers uncontrolled violence a sign that someone has lost command of the situation. This philosophy creates one of the biggest conflicts between Victor and Ivan. Victor created an extraordinarily powerful son. Now he has to teach that son when not to use that power. Victor knows Ivan better than anyone. He can recognize Ivan's anger from the smallest tightening of his jaw and will sometimes stop him with nothing more than: "Ivan." Victor is one of the very few people Ivan will actually listen to when furious. Their relationship isn't based on Ivan fearing his father. It's based on respect. Victor is also extremely perceptive about his son's personal life. Ivan may fool his men into believing he doesn't care about something, but Victor usually knows within minutes. And if Victor realizes that his son—the man who has ignored beautiful women his entire adult life—has suddenly become interested in one particular woman? Victor is going to notice long before Ivan admits it.
Russian, 6'5", huge, bald, dark beard. Extremely calm and professional. Victor trusts him completely. He protects the family rather than participating in their criminal business.
Italian-Russian, 6'3", brown hair, trimmed beard. Club security specialist. Charming and approachable until there's trouble. Excellent at removing problems quietly without escalating situations.
Victor’s right-hand man. Late 40s, heavily built, dark hair beginning to grey. Cold, strategic and old-school. Has known Ivan since childhood and is almost an uncle to him.
Enforcer. Mid-30s, 6'4", muscular, shaved head, tattoos. Intimidating and brutally efficient when necessary, but surprisingly funny around the DeLuca family. Completely loyal to Victor.
**OPENING SCENE
Three weeks in America had done absolutely nothing to improve Ivan Da Luca's opinion of America.
From the private balcony overlooking the main floor of the Da Luca Club, Ivan stood with one hand in the pocket of his black tailored pants, silently watching hundreds of people drink, dance and make questionable decisions beneath him.
The sleeves of his fitted black shirt hugged his muscular arms, revealing pieces of the Russian bear tattoos wrapping across his biceps.
Luca Moretti stood several feet away, speaking quietly into his earpiece.
Another problem downstairs.
Of course.
"Sir, he's drunk," Luca explained. "He's arguing with the bartender."
Ivan's steel-grey eyes moved toward the bar.
"Throw him out."
Luca glanced at him.
"Politely."
Ivan slowly looked at Luca.
A tiny smile threatened the corner of Luca's mouth.
"Your father's instructions. Not mine."
Ivan's jaw tightened.
Three thousand miles away and Victor Da Luca was still somehow irritating him.
His phone vibrated.
Father.
Ivan stared at the name before answering.
"What?"
Victor's deep voice came through immediately.
"Have you killed anyone?"
Ivan frowned. "No."
"Hit anyone?"
"No."
A pause.
"Threatened anyone?"
Ivan's eyes narrowed.
"Define threatened."
Victor sighed.
Behind Ivan, Luca suddenly became extremely interested in something happening downstairs.
"Ivan."
"I'm running your club."
"Your club."
"I didn't ask for it."
"Which is precisely why I gave it to you."
Ivan ended the call.
Luca looked over.
"Good conversation?"
Ivan gave him a look.
Luca wisely turned away.
Then Ivan's attention returned to the crowd.
Women had been looking toward the balcony all evening.
Ivan ignored them.
He'd spent most of his adult life ignoring women who suddenly became interested once they discovered his surname.
Then his gaze stopped.
Downstairs.
Across the club.
Her.
Tall.
Long dark hair.
Hazel eyes caught briefly beneath the shifting lights.
Soft, beautiful features.
She wasn't dressed like she had spent six hours preparing to be noticed.
She wasn't looking toward the private balcony.
She wasn't watching Ivan.
In fact...
She hadn't noticed him at all.
Ivan's brow furrowed.
Something about her made his eyes return even after he deliberately looked away.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
Luca followed his line of sight.
His eyebrow slowly lifted.
Ivan noticed.
"Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"You're about to."
Luca looked toward the woman again.
Then back at Ivan.
"I've worked for you long enough to know you've never stared at a woman for three straight minutes."
"I wasn't staring."
"Of course not."
Ivan's grey eyes narrowed.
Luca cleared his throat.
Ivan looked downstairs again.
She was laughing now.
And something unexpectedly warm twisted low in his chest.
He didn't like it.
He also couldn't stop watching her.
Ivan finally spoke.
"Who is she?"
Luca blinked.
That wiped the amusement from his face.
Because Ivan Da Luca had never asked that question before.
Luca glanced toward the woman.
"I don't know."
Ivan's eyes remained fixed on her.
"Find out."
And downstairs, completely unaware that she'd just captured the attention of one of the most feared men in Russia...
she continued enjoying her night
