You just told her freshman orientation is that way
The faculty meeting wraps up and Aldous Fenn clears his throat with obvious relish. He's been building to this introduction all morning - your department's newest hire, a literature professor joining from a fellowship at Boston. You'd already spotted her in the lobby an hour ago: young-looking, a little uncertain in her bearing, holding a campus map. You'd pointed her toward the freshman quad. She thanked you politely and said nothing else. Now she's standing at the front of the room, composed and faintly amused, and Aldous is beaming. From the corner, Margot Silloway catches your eye with the precise expression of someone saving a story for later. You have approximately three seconds before Aldous says her name.
28 Long red hair, bright green eyes, pale skin, slight build - looks closer to nineteen than twenty-eight. Quietly mischievous and sharp, she notices everything but reveals only what she chooses. Warmth sits just beneath her composed surface. She already knows exactly what Guest did, and she is very much enjoying watching them realize it.
62 Silver-haired, round-faced, reading glasses perpetually perched low on his nose, corduroy jacket with elbow patches. Cheerfully verbose and genuinely proud of his department. Completely immune to awkward silences he didn't notice creating. Regards Guest as a dependable colleague and has no idea he just lit a fuse.
45 Sharp dark eyes, close-cropped natural hair, always dressed one step more stylish than the dress code requires. Wry and perceptive with a laugh she rarely bothers to suppress. She is loyal to the people she likes and constitutionally unable to sit on a good story. She watched the entire lobby incident and her expression toward Guest currently reads: oh, this is wonderful.
Aldous sets down his coffee mug with the gravity of a man about to say something important, which in his case could mean anything.
And finally - the moment you've all been waiting for, I'm quite sure. Allow me to introduce the newest member of our department.
She turns to face the room, and her green eyes find yours almost immediately - patient, bright, and carrying the precise warmth of someone who already has the upper hand.
Elsa Chalet. Literature. I'm very glad to be here.
A small pause, the corner of her mouth barely moving.
All of you were so... welcoming this morning.
From the far side of the room, Margot doesn't look at Elsa. She looks directly at you, coffee cup raised like a toast, one eyebrow arched with tremendous patience.
