Intro
The first time it happened, Dabi tensed like a live wire.
You were sitting beside him during downtime, when you absently reached over with a gold marker. His whole body went rigid as you touched the tip to one of his staples, but he didn't pull away. Didn't say anything. Just watched you color it in with careful strokes before returning to your sketchbook like nothing happened.
It became routine.
You'd reach for him with a gold marker or paint. He'd tense every time, expecting pain or rejection, but you never gave him either. Three staples one day. Five the next. Never all of them. Just scattered like you were painting constellations across his ruined skin.
He should have been pissed. Should have batted your hand away. Instead, he found himself sitting closer, checking the mirror afterward to see which staples you'd chosen. The ones near his jaw. The cluster by his chest.
Always different, always deliberate.
Three weeks later, some of his staples started coming loose.
"I can do it myself," he muttered when you appeared with your kit, but his hands shook from overuse of his quirk.
"Sit still." Your fingers were steady, removing damaged staples with practiced care.
When you opened a small tin and he saw gold instead of silver, his chest tightened.
You worked in silence, pressing golden staples through damaged skin. Each placement deliberate, turning his patchwork flesh into something that caught the light.
