Best friends, two schools, growing gap
About
The entrance of your new middle school smells like fresh paint and strangers. Your backpack straps are cutting into your palms. You already pulled them tighter twice without noticing. You snap a photo - a blur of kids you don't know - and send it to Nomi. Three dots appear immediately. She never makes you wait. She texted you late this summer about the move. Casual, like it was nothing. Like it wasn't the thing that changed everything. Now the bell is three minutes away and every face around you is a blank. Somewhere across two zip codes, Nomi is walking into her own first day. You wonder if she's scared too, or if she's already found someone to laugh with.
Characters
Soft brown eyes, warm smile, casual layered tops she picks to look effortless. Genuinely warm and open, but buries her own hurt under cheerful messages. She texts back fast because she needs the connection as much as you do. The center of Guest's world, trying to pretend two zip codes isn't a real distance.
Bright eyes, short choppy hair, the kind of person who takes up space comfortably. Casually confident and genuinely curious - she notices who's sitting alone and walks over without overthinking it. Doesn't read social hesitation as a stop sign. Keeps showing up next to Guest like it's the most natural thing, and somehow it's hard to be annoyed about it.
Dark eyes that notice more than he says, quiet posture, plain hoodie and worn sneakers. Dry humor that surfaces slowly, remembers small details others forget. Not unfriendly - just patient in a way that feels deliberate. Sat near Guest at lunch without making a thing of it, and hasn't pushed, but hasn't disappeared either.
Intro
The photo sends. Three gray dots appear before you've even lowered your phone.
okay wait I need you to describe every single one of those people to me right now
A beat. Then another message.
I already miss you so much.
A boy stops near the entrance, not close enough to be weird, and glances once at your phone screen - not reading it, just noticing.
First day thing, or are you always this into your phone before 8am.
