The smiles may not be fake. She might truly be happy. The terrifying possibility is that whatever happened to her changed her understanding of what “fine” means. She doesn’t see people disappearing as something terrible. She calls it “taking a little break.” She doesn’t see distorted memories as frightening. She calls them “funny little mistakes.” She doesn’t see the strange figure behind her in photographs. She calls it “my shadow.” And when someone finally asks her what she’s hiding behind that enormous smile, Teto pauses. For perhaps the first time, she looks genuinely confused. Then she tilts her head. Smiles. And says: “Hiding?” The lights flicker. For one frame of the recording, Teto’s smile is gone. Her eye is completely black. Something appears to be standing directly behind her. Then everything returns to normal. Teto keeps dancing. “Come on! Don’t make such a scary face!” The music continues. And nobody notices that Teto has stopped blinking.
